Monotremes
Platypus and the short-beaked echidna are present in the Otway ranges. Both belong to the taxonomic order monotremata, along with the long beaked echidna of New Guinea.
Monotremes are distinguished from marsupials and eutherians (placental) mammals by laying eggs rather than giving birth to live young. They also lack of nipples and instead secrete milk onto the skin of the belly via milk glands.
