Issues introduction
This website is under construction.
This section will include descriptions and images of issues that threaten ecosystems, flora or fauna populations in the Otways ranges and catchments.
The pages describing each issue will include links to the pages of places where they are impacting or may in future impact, and to the ecosystems, flora, and fauna that they threaten.
Issue highlights
Dead and dying grass trees (Xanthorea
sp.) are
the most obvious evidence of phytophthora
infection.
Phytophthora cinnamomi (cinnamon fungus / bush dieback)
Phytophthora is a soil dwelling fungal disease that is spreading through the Otways killing the bush.
The fact that planning and land management decissions and activities are being undertaken in ways that will facilitate it's spread is one of the driving motivations behind the creation of this website.
Sea level rise
Global sea levels have been rising for a century and with the impact of global warming the rates of rise are expected to accelerate.
The sea level rise pages provide maps of anticipated inundation along the Otway and adjacent coasts given a one metre sea level rise (the most likely prediction for 2100).
(Note:
older browsers will not be able to present the maps.)
