Phytophthora cinnamomi (Cinnamon Fungus) and Bush Dieback

Site observations - Track 16

Photographs are being prepared that contrast the condition of this track immediately after construction, after 3 months of use and then after the 2008 Otway Odyssey mountain-bike race.

The density of grass-trees in this area is unusually high. The track builders cut out numerous plants, including some that were up to a metre in height. Grasstrees grow about 1 cm per year, so a plant of that size would be about 100 years old.

The track winds through one of the largest blocks of uninfected grass-tree dominated woodland in the Yaugher Bush. Track 17 nearby passes directly through phytophthora outbreaks, so the risk of phytopthora being spread to this block is very high.
